If tooth decay is allowed to continue, the surrounding gum tissue is infected causing an abscess. An abscess is a pus-filled pocket that forms at the end of the roots of the tooth. Thereby causing intense pain to the patient. Endodontics is the branch of dentistry which deals with the cause, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseased dental pulp and surrounding supporting structures, usually by removal of the nerve and pulpal tissue, thorough cleaning of the cavity and replacing it with suitable bioinert filling materials. Sometimes, a patient needing root canal treatment may experience no pain whatsoever. There are instances where a dental exam uncovers a crack or fracture that has allowed bacteria to settle into the root. When this cannot otherwise be repaired, the most suitable option is a root canal. Depending on patient’s clinical conditions of the tooth, treatment can be Conventional RCT / Single visit RCT/ Laser assisted RCT. Fractured teeth, teeth with minimal infection, intentional RCT, mutilated teeth with very minimal infection are ideal candidates for single visit RCT. In Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) or laser assisted RCT, fiber optic and certain photosensitizers (Methylene Blue) DIODE LASER is passed into the canal. This parallel beam of LASER activated the photosensitizer creates reactive oxygen species which helps in eradicating the bacteria which conventional therapy fails to eliminate. In cases of prolonged extensive infection even after copious irrigation and cleaning of canals we fail to eliminate some bacteria which reside in the micro-channels of the dentin, also in cases of prolonged infection and abscess where teeth do not respond o anesthetic agents, LASER assisted RCT is the treatment of choice.
