Wisdom teeth, or third molars, located at the back of the mouth, are the last adult teeth to erupt, or enter the mouth. Lack of space for their eruption can leave them impacted in the bone. In case of infection, damage to neighboring teeth and tissues, periodontal disease, receding gums, loosened teeth, bone loss, jaw weakening, or development of associated cysts and tumors, or interference with needed dental treatments require their removal. Removal of impacted tooth is a minor surgical procedure done under local anesthesia in full precautions done by an oral surgeon.
